"What's the plural for banjo? Banjos? Banjoes? Or is it Banji? That’s one burning question you didn’t know you needed to ask. And country-funk-disco band Cowboy Simple are ready to help. Technically, grammatically speaking you simply add an ‘s’ to the word banjo. Some folks add an ‘es’ as in banjoes, But the most standard form is banjos. Case closed. However Cowboy Simple reckon you should do it a little different. And in their new song River Don’t Lie Cowboy Simple are staking their claim for banji. There’s something liberating in that isn’t there? And when it comes down to it that’s what this whole song is about – freedom. Freedom with a capital F. “F you I wanna be free”, freedom. The feeling that you get when you need to move on. When you’ve had enough and you just need to be any place but where you are. And its about the truth you find in the simplest things when the world feels very post-truth here’s a song about something positive and elemental – water that flows and is never the same but in another way is always the same. That’s the spirit of country music or country music Cowboy Simple style.”

Cowboy Simple, country-funkers based in Sydney and comprised of ex-SWOOP and Professor Groove alumni, who have been honing their sound in small Surry Hills pub The Carrington for the last 18 months, release their 3rd single River Don't Lie (To Me) on October 25th. Swampy, funky, shuffle-y, and very catchy, it reminds one of the Stones circa-Exile On Main Street, exploring Delta-backwaters and Texan truckstops and filtering through an Australian pop sensibility.

Singer/ composer Roland Kapferer tries to explain:
“Here’s a song we wrote about banjos and about the rivers and valleys and hollows they come from. Mostly, I suppose It’s about wanting to be some place, any place than where you are – about being in a place and feeling out of place. All archetypes of the country music genre come together in this song which is about being crushed by the things around you and movement up and out and away. References to places and cities that could be any place or any city anywhere in the world.”

River Don’t Lie (To Me) is released Worldwide on Personal Best Records through MGM Distribution on Friday, October 25, 2024
